Freemium AI Chatbots

What is Claude?

Claude is the AI assistant developed by Anthropic, considered by many professionals to be the most careful, accurate, and pleasant AI chatbot for working with documents and long text. Built by former OpenAI researchers with a special focus on safety and AI alignment, Claude stands out for its ability to handle very long contexts (up to 200,000 tokens), its rigor in admitting uncertainty, and a writing quality that many consider superior to ChatGPT for analytical and technical text.

The Claude 3.5 and 3.7 model family (Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus) offers different trade-offs between speed, cost, and capability. Claude 3.5 Sonnet in particular has positioned itself as one of the best models for programming and data analysis on the market.

Who is Claude for?

  • Professionals with long documents: lawyers, consultants, researchers who need to analyze full contracts, reports, or papers.
  • Developers who prioritize code quality and clarity of technical explanations.
  • Writers and editors looking for an assistant with better literary “taste” and more willing to admit when it doesn’t know something.
  • Enterprise teams working with sensitive information who value Anthropic’s privacy guarantees.
  • Researchers and academics who need analytical rigor and honest treatment of uncertainty.

Core features

1. A 200,000-token context window

Claude’s context window (200K tokens on Sonnet and Opus) is double ChatGPT Plus (128K) and roughly equals 150,000 words or an entire book. You can load a 50-page contract, a full annual report, multiple documents, or a large codebase and ask questions across the whole content coherently. Claude doesn’t “forget” the beginning of a document when it reaches the end, as happens with smaller-context models.

2. Writing and analysis quality

Claude is recognized for its more nuanced, analytical writing style. Where ChatGPT can sometimes be formulaic, Claude tends to produce text with more voice, more layers of analysis, and greater conceptual precision. Particularly strong for: critical analysis, argumentative essays, technical documentation, research synthesis, and any text where precision and depth matter more than speed.

3. Projects with persistent instructions

Claude Projects let you create persistent contexts: add reference documents (style guide, company information, knowledge base), set specific instructions, and every conversation inside the project starts from that context. Ideal for teams that use Claude regularly and want consistency without repeating context in every chat.

4. Programming with Claude (Artifacts)

Claude 3.5 Sonnet is considered the best programming model available in a chat interface. Artifacts let you see and run code directly in the Claude panel: generate React components, data visualizations, interactive tools, and mini-apps that render in real time. Claude’s code tends to be cleaner, better documented, and have fewer errors than competitors for complex tasks.

5. Calibrated honesty

A signature trait of Claude: when it doesn’t know something, it says so. When an answer depends on context, it flags it. When a claim is likely but not certain, it qualifies it. This “calibrated honesty” makes Claude more reliable for important decisions: you know when to trust the answer and when to verify.

6. Claude.ai for visual analysis

Claude analyzes images with high accuracy: describes content, extracts text from screenshots, analyzes diagrams and charts, reviews designs and UI, and interprets visual data. Especially useful for reviewing product wireframes, analyzing dashboards, or extracting information from scanned documents.

Real-world use cases

Long contract analysis

Upload a 40-page services contract and ask: “Extract the exclusivity clauses, early-termination conditions, and liability limits. Identify any clause that could be problematic for a startup.” Claude reads the whole document, identifies the requested elements with page references, and provides analysis of the specific risks for the described profile.

Codebase refactoring

Paste a 500-line Python file and ask: “Identify the antipatterns, suggest performance improvements, and rewrite the most critical functions with documentation”. Claude analyzes the full code, understands the app’s overall pattern, and makes systemic recommendations, not just point fixes.

Research synthesis across multiple papers

Paste 5-6 complete academic papers into the conversation and ask: “Synthesize the state of the art in this field, identify points of consensus, areas of debate, and research gaps”. Claude produces a structured literature review much faster than doing it manually.

Tips to get the most out of Claude

Use Artifacts for reusable content

When you generate something you’ll want to use or iterate on (a document, a code component, a template), explicitly ask Claude to create it as an Artifact. The Artifact appears in a side panel you can edit directly, download, or continue modifying in the same conversation without losing the result.

Ask Claude to think before answering

For complex questions, add: “Think step by step before answering” or “Before giving your analysis, list the most relevant factors to consider”. This chain-of-thought technique significantly improves reasoning quality on complex tasks.

Use the context window to compare documents

One of Claude’s most underrated advantages: load two versions of a document, two similar contracts, or two strategy proposals and ask: “What are the key differences between these two documents?” or “Which of these two proposals better covers the risks mentioned in the briefing?”. Claude keeps all the information available simultaneously.

Frequently asked questions about Claude

Is Claude better than ChatGPT?

It depends on the task. Claude is superior at: long-document analysis, analytical writing quality, complex programming, honest admission of uncertainty, and contexts where rigor matters more than speed. ChatGPT is superior at: general versatility, tool access (GPT Store), integration with external services, real-time web search, and image generation. Many professionals use both for different use cases.

Does Claude have internet access?

Not by default. Claude’s knowledge has a cutoff date (usually 6-12 months before the latest version) and it can’t fetch real-time information. However, via the API and external tools, Claude can connect to the internet. Web-search capabilities are gradually being rolled out in the claude.ai web interface.

Is Claude Pro worth it over the free plan?

If you use Claude regularly for work, yes. Claude Pro includes access to Claude 3.5 Sonnet (much more capable than Haiku), Projects with persistent context, Artifacts for code and content, PDF and data file analysis, and significantly more usage before daily limits. For complex tasks, the quality gap between Haiku and Sonnet is very noticeable.

What’s the difference between Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus?

Haiku is the fastest and cheapest model, ideal for simple text tasks. Sonnet balances speed and quality: the recommended model for most professional tasks and the best on the market for programming. Opus is Anthropic’s most powerful model, for extremely complex analysis where response time is secondary to quality.
