What is Google NotebookLM?

Google NotebookLM is an AI research assistant that lets you upload your own documents — PDFs, articles, notes, YouTube videos, presentations — and ask questions about them in natural language. Unlike ChatGPT or Claude, NotebookLM doesn’t answer from general knowledge: it answers only from the documents you provide.

Launched in 2024 as part of Google Labs and available for free, NotebookLM has become the favorite tool of students, researchers, journalists, and professionals who need to process and understand large volumes of their own information.

Who is NotebookLM for?

  • University students who want to understand textbooks, notes, and academic articles without reading them line by line.
  • Researchers and academics dealing with dozens of papers who need to extract cross-referenced information.
  • Journalists and writers working with interviews, reports, and long documents.
  • Lawyers and consultants who need to summarize contracts, regulations, or case files.
  • Enterprise professionals who want to query internal manuals, annual reports, or technical docs.

Core features

1. Chat with your sources

Upload up to 50 sources per notebook (PDFs, Google Docs, Google Slides, web URLs, YouTube videos, text or audio files) and ask them direct questions. NotebookLM automatically cites which fragment of which document supports each answer, eliminating the hallucinations that plague other chatbots.

2. Automatic summaries

When you add a document, NotebookLM automatically generates a structured summary with key points, suggested FAQs, and related topics inside your notebook. The perfect starting point before going deeper.

3. Audio Overviews (AI podcast)

One of the most original features on the market: NotebookLM generates an 8-15 minute podcast where two synthetic AI voices debate and explain your documents. Ideal for reviewing material while exercising or driving. Voice quality and conversation naturalness are notably above expectation.

4. Notes and drafts

The built-in notes editor lets you write directly in NotebookLM, citing fragments of your sources. You can ask the AI to expand your notes, rephrase them, or convert them into specific formats (email, report, outline).

5. Mind maps and timelines (NotebookLM Plus)

The paid version adds automatic concept visualizations, timelines, and mind maps generated from your documents. Also includes sentiment analysis and contradiction detection across sources.

Real-world use cases

Preparing a university exam

Upload semester notes, PDF textbooks, and past exams. Ask NotebookLM: “Create 20 multiple-choice questions on the most important topics” or “Which concepts appear most often in past exams?” The notebook answers with exact citations from your sources.

Analyzing a complex contract

Upload the PDF and ask: “What are the exit clauses?”, “What penalties exist for breach?”, “Is there any clause limiting my ability to work with competitors?” Each answer comes with the exact page and paragraph.

Journalism research

Upload 30 articles on a topic, interview transcripts, and reference reports. Ask: “What do the different sources say about X?”, “On which points do official sources contradict interviewees?” NotebookLM will tell you exactly which document each fact comes from.

Corporate training

HR or training teams can upload employee manuals, internal policies, and onboarding materials. Employees ask directly: “How many vacation days do I get in my first year?” without reading an 80-page manual.

Pricing and plans

Plan Price/month Usage limits
Free $0 100 notebooks · 50 sources/notebook · 100 chats/day · standard Audio Overviews

Google AI Pro ~$20/month Higher limits · Gemini 2.5 Pro · Deep Research
